Why you’ll continue to be slow!

You should be faster than what you current are! Let me show you why!

Let me be frank. There's typically multiple reasons behind why you aren't as fast as you should be. No, it's not your genetics. It's typically your effort and application. In this case, a lack thereof.

Don't get me wrong, you're not doomed. It just starts with effort, consistency, dedication and education around the basic concepts of speed. Sticking to a well-designed program and addressing all the variables around improving speed will ultimately see you make SERIOUS improvements. So what may be holding you back?

Quickly before we discuss the variables, let's clearly define speed. As I see it, there's two types... Acceleration and Max Speed. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. The better acceleration you have, typically means you display large amounts of force in a short period of time. This is seen at the start of a 100m sprint. Max or Top Speed, is the maximum velocity reached. For example, most 100m sprinters reach their top speed between the 50-75 meter mark of a sprint. To improve your overall speed, we address both of these components. Now let's chat about the variables.

Frequency

Through our experience with working with athletes, by adding sprints to most strength sessions (high intensity, minimal volume) has seen some amazing results. This high frequency exposure, at a high intensity, yields the best results. Avoid prolonged, poor quality sessions.

Technique:

Without a good technique, your body will struggle to be truly fast...Firstly, poor technique will inhibit you from expressing force well, decreasing acceleration. Secondly, poor stride mechanics will increase your stride frequency, impacting your top end speed mechanics. Technique matters and just like sprint frequency, needs to be consistently iterated and improved.

Strength:

You will very rarely see a 100m sprinter that isn't strong and powerful. Strength is the basis or foundation for power. To be able to accelerate fast, you have to be able to generate force into the ground. Without strength, you won't be as powerful or reach your true acceleration potential.

Body Composition:

Excess body fat can slow you down from an acceleration standpoint. The fastest athletes in the world are lean, strong and powerful. Not to say you can't be athletic if you're carrying a few, however you will be faster if you can produce the same amount of force, carrying less weight.

Hopefully discussing these variables provides some clarity around the key areas that you need to shift your focus to in order to get FAST! This may take a bit of time to figure out what to do. Which not many of us have. Our Athlete's at Your Athlete Hub are seeing great results through addressing these variables in their respective programs.
